Aquamarine (Beryl) from Malawi – 100 g

This 100 g selection consists of natural, untreated Aquamarine from Malawi. The rough pieces predominantly show pale blue-green to greenish-blue colours and range from translucent material to locally more transparent areas. Natural fracture surfaces, small inclusions and beige to brownish surface material emphasize the untreated character of the stones. Differences in shape, size and colour give each selection its own individual appearance. Aquamarine belongs to the Beryl group and is appreciated both as a collector mineral and as rough material for cutting and lapidary work because of its characteristic blue-green colour. 

Geology & Origin

Aquamarine is the blue to blue-green variety of the mineral Beryl. Its colour is mainly caused by small amounts of iron within the crystal structure. Beryl commonly forms in granitic pegmatites, where the slow cooling of mineral-rich melts can produce comparatively large mineral formations. Malawi is known for a variety of pegmatite occurrences containing Beryl and other typical pegmatite minerals. The material offered here combines the characteristic colour of Aquamarine with the natural, unpolished structure of genuine rough material.
