Aegirine crystals from Mt. Malosa, Zomba, Malawi – small cabinet specimen as unique piece

This cabinet specimen from Mt. Malosa in Malawi features striking Aegirine crystals on light colored Feldspar matrix. The dark green to nearly black crystals show elongated prismatic and parallel intergrown habits with strong vitreous to silky luster. The crystals are clearly recognizable and create an attractive contrast against the pale Feldspar crystals of the matrix. Small rusty brown coatings further enhance the natural texture of the specimen. With its strong crystal development and aesthetic combination with Feldspar, this piece displays a very classic appearance for the famous pegmatites of Mt. Malosa.

Geology & origin

Mt. Malosa in the Zomba district of Malawi is one of the world famous localities for alkaline pegmatites and rare silicate minerals. The deposits are especially known for excellently formed crystals of Aegirine, Feldspar, Quartz, and numerous rare associated minerals. Aegirine belongs to the pyroxene group and typically forms dark prismatic crystals in alkaline igneous rocks. Specimens from Mt. Malosa are highly appreciated among collectors worldwide because of their aesthetic crystal forms and mineralogical diversity.
