blue Barite from Hartsel, CO, USA; 100 g
These pieces show the characteristic light to medium blue Barite from Hartsel, Colorado, with occasional yellow zones caused by iron oxides. The material ranges from transparent to translucent and displays the typical tabular cleavage fragments for which this locality is known. The vivid contrast between blue and golden-yellow areas gives the stones an eye-catching and lively appearance.
Geology & origin
The Hartsel site in Park County, Colorado, is part of an extensive Barite occurrence formed in hydrothermal veins within sedimentary rocks. The bluish color results from radiation effects and color centers within the crystal lattice, while iron oxides are responsible for the yellowish tones. This deposit is a classic example of color-varied, secondary Barite from the Rocky Mountains.
