Rhabdophane - (Nd) from Karnasurt, Lovozero, Kola, Russia –  miniature specimen as unique piece.

This miniature specimen from Karnasurt in the Lovozero massif on the Kola Peninsula in Russia features Rhabdophane-(Nd) on light colored matrix. The dark to blackish gray crystals occur as fine prismatic to needle like aggregates and create an attractive contrast against the pale surrounding matrix. The crystals are clearly recognizable and typical for the rare earth mineralization of this famous alkaline deposit. Despite its small size, the specimen displays an interesting structure and originates from one of the world’s best known localities for unusual rare earth minerals.

Geology & origin

The Lovozero massif on the Kola Peninsula is one of the world’s most important alkaline intrusive complexes and is famous for its enormous diversity of rare minerals. The deposits of Karnasurt in particular produced numerous rare phosphates, silicates, and rare earth minerals. Rhabdophane-(Nd) is a rare neodymium phosphate belonging to the group of hydrated rare earth phosphates and commonly occurs in fine needle like to radial crystal aggregates. Specimens from Lovozero are highly valued among collectors because of their mineralogical diversity and scientific importance.
