Clinosafflorite and Nordgruvan, Nordmark, Sweden – small cabinet specimen as unique piece
This interesting small cabinet specimen originates from the classic Nordgruvan locality in the Nordmark mining district of Sweden. The specimen displays Clinosafflorite as pink to reddish mineralized areas within a dark matrix. The characteristic coloration of Clinosafflorite contrasts distinctly with the surrounding host rock and gives the specimen an attractive appearance. Individual crystals are not visible in the picture. The mineral occurs mainly as massive to finely crystalline aggregates, representing the typical habit of this rare cobalt arsenide mineral.
Geology & Origin
Nordgruvan is one of the historic mines of the Nordmark district in Sweden, a region well known for iron ore deposits as well as numerous rare cobalt, nickel and arsenic minerals. Clinosafflorite is a cobalt arsenide that forms under hydrothermal conditions, commonly associated with other cobalt and nickel minerals. The Nordmark localities have been highly regarded by mineralogists and collectors since the nineteenth century and have produced many scientifically important mineral discoveries.
